The first reset

Three years in, the league tore up its squads. Franchises could keep only a few players, and everyone else went back into a pool of 167 lots for ten teams, because two new franchises, Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India, joined for 2011. It was by far the biggest auction yet, and both newcomers were among the heaviest spenders as they built squads from nothing.

Indian players at the top

For the first time, the most expensive buys were Indian. Kolkata Knight Riders paid US$2.4 million for Gautam Gambhir, a record, and made him captain; Robin Uthappa, Yusuf Pathan and Rohit Sharma all went for about US$2 million. After two auctions dominated by overseas reputations, franchises had learned that a proven Indian player was harder to replace than a foreign one, since each XI could field only four overseas players.

Gambhir's price was the start of a rebuild that took Kolkata to their first title the following year. The Kolkata Knight Riders page traces it.

Unsold, then unstoppable

Chris Gayle went through the auction without a bid. Brought in by Royal Challengers Bangalore as an injury replacement a few weeks into the season, he became its outstanding batter and carried the side to the final. No other entry in this archive shows as clearly that the auction room can be simply wrong, and it is why the unsold list on each season's page is worth reading as closely as the top buys.

Chennai Super Kings, who kept most of their core and spent modestly, won the title again.

The shape of a mega auction

The 2011 auction set the pattern every later mega auction follows. Spending jumped to more than ₹280 crore, and the overseas share of it fell to under half, because franchises rebuilding a whole squad need Indian players first. The two newcomers and Kolkata spent the most; Chennai, Mumbai and Rajasthan, who had kept more of their squads, spent the least.

Chennai's title, won by one of the smallest spenders, repeated the lesson of 2008 and 2009. Across the mega auctions in this archive, the franchise that keeps a strong core and buys around it has usually done better than the one that starts again.
