A record broken twice

The 2024 auction was the first held outside India, in Dubai. Sunrisers Hyderabad bought Pat Cummins, Australia's World Cup-winning captain, for ₹20.5 crore, breaking Sam Curran's record. Soon after, Kolkata Knight Riders paid ₹24.75 crore for Mitchell Starc, who had not played in the league for eight years. It was the largest jump in the record price the auction has seen.

The final the auction set up

The two record buyers met in the final. Cummins captained Hyderabad there with 18 wickets of his own; Starc, expensive through the league stage, was player of the match in the first qualifier and again in the final as Kolkata won their third title. Few record prices in this archive have been judged so directly.

The rest of the list

Chennai paid ₹14 crore for Daryl Mitchell and ₹8.4 crore for the uncapped Sameer Rizvi. Punjab's ₹11.75 crore for Harshal Patel returned 24 wickets, the most in the season. Bangalore's ₹11.5 crore for Alzarri Joseph bought three matches. Gujarat spent the most, rebuilding after Hardik Pandya returned to Mumbai. Reading the numbers

Overseas players took nearly two thirds of the money in 2024, and the two record prices alone came to more than ₹45 crore. Gujarat, Kolkata and Hyderabad spent the most. Lucknow and Rajasthan spent the least.

Unusually, the two franchises that made the biggest purchases met in the final, and the champions were second on spend. Josh Hazlewood, Adil Rashid and Josh Inglis were among the capped players nobody bought. A year later, at the mega auction, Bengaluru paid ₹12.5 crore for Hazlewood, and he took 22 wickets in their title-winning season. Rashid went unsold again, and Kolkata's title made Starc's price look cheap in hindsight.
