The World XI played one ODI against Asia XI for tsunami relief in January 2005 and three in the 2005 Super Series against Australia. The archive covers each.

Why the ODIs happened

The 2005 ICC Super Series pitted the reigning number-one ODI side (Australia) against a composite World XI. Three ODIs and a Test were scheduled; Australia won each. Earlier that year, in January 2005, a World XI had played one ODI against Asia XI at the MCG for tsunami relief.

The four ODIs

All three 2005 Super Series ODIs were played at Docklands in Melbourne in October 2005. Australia won by 93 runs, 55 runs and 156 runs. The January tsunami relief ODI at the MCG was a one-off rather than a series, and the World XI won it by 112 runs.

Who played

The Super Series side included Sehwag, Dravid, Kallis, Lara, Gayle, Sangakkara, Pietersen, Flintoff, Afridi, Muralitharan, Pollock and Vettori. The tsunami ODI side drew on a different cross-section of the era, from Ponting, Hayden, Gilchrist, Warne and McGrath to Lara, Cairns and Fleming.

Head-to-head

The World XI’s ODI record is: 3 losses to Australia (2005), 1 win over Asia XI (2005).

Since

Cricket has not returned to the composite-XI ODI at any global level since 2005.

What CricArcade shows

CricArcade lets you pick a cross-nation XI at any point and see how it plays. The engine reads real careers so a composite side plays like the sum of its individual careers rather than a settled national side.
