Dinesh Karthik
On scorecards: KD Karthik · Right-hand bat
Dinesh Karthik, a wicketkeeper-batter, played seventeen IPL seasons for six franchises. One title came along the way. Only five players have represented more franchises.
The arrival
Dinesh Karthik arrived through the auction: Delhi Daredevils paid ₹2.10 cr (US$525k), against a base price of ₹80 lakh, at the very first IPL auction.
That first season brought 13 matches and 145 runs. The best was still to come.
The peak
The high point with the bat was 2013, for Mumbai Indians: 510 runs at an average of 28.3, striking at 124.1 in a season when the league as a whole struck at 121.5, with 2 fifties, and a highest score of 86. Mumbai Indians won the title that year. There were two seasons of 400 runs or more in all (2013 and 2018).
Measured against the league around it, though, the most destructive season was 2022: 330 runs at a strike rate of 183.3, 49 runs per hundred balls quicker than the IPL as a whole that year.

2014, Delhi Daredevils, second time round. Bought at the 2014 auction for ₹12.50 cr. 14 matches and 325 runs.
2015, Royal Challengers Bangalore. Bought at the 2015 auction for ₹10.50 cr. 16 matches and 141 runs.

2022 to 2024, Royal Challengers Bangalore, second time round. Bought at the 2022 auction for ₹5.50 cr. 44 matches and 796 runs.
8 spells with six franchises in all. The longest was with Kolkata Knight Riders, 2018 to 2021.
How the runs came
Across the career, Dinesh Karthik struck at 135.3. The league around those same seasons, weighted by how much batting each one involved, struck at 129.9, so Dinesh Karthik scored about 5 runs per hundred balls faster than the typical batter of the time. 58% of the runs came in fours and sixes: 466 fours and 161 sixes.
The ball-by-ball record adds the detail. 34.1% of the balls Dinesh Karthik faced were dot balls, a lower share than 71% of the 140 batters who have faced 500 balls or more in the IPL. A six came every 22.2 balls, and a four every 7.7.
The fielding record: 145 catches, 46 run-outs and 37 stumpings, the stumpings a reminder of the gloves.
At the auction
Dinesh Karthik went under the hammer seven times. The highest price was ₹12.50 cr, paid by Delhi Daredevils in 2014, more than 6 times the base price. The price climbed with the reputation: ₹2.10 cr in 2008, ₹5.50 cr by 2022.
Seasons without an auction entry were played under a retention, a trade or a signing made outside the auction.
The legacy
On the all-time IPL lists, among 810 players, Dinesh Karthik finished 13th for runs and 5th for matches played.
