East Africa was assembled as a composite side of Kenyan, Ugandan, Tanzanian and Zambian cricketers for the inaugural 1975 Cricket World Cup. The archive covers each of the three ODIs.

The 1975 associate berth

The inaugural 1975 Cricket World Cup had two associate berths. Sri Lanka took one; East Africa took the other. The East Africa side was a composite of Kenyan, Ugandan, Tanzanian and Zambian cricketers, mostly of South Asian heritage, who had been playing on the East African circuit through the 1960s and early 1970s.

The three ODIs

East Africa were placed in Group A with England, India and New Zealand, and lost all three matches. India bowled them out for 120 and chased ten-wicket. England posted 290-5 and won by 196 runs. New Zealand posted 309-5 and won by 181 runs.

Who played

Harilal Shah captained. Zulfiqar Ali, Frasat Ali and Praful Mehta were among the batters and part-time bowlers who made up the side.

Head-to-head

East Africa’s ODI record is three losses to three teams: India, England, New Zealand. There is no other opponent in the record.

Since

East Africa never played another ODI. Kenya subsequently pursued individual associate status and played its own ODIs from 1996 onward; the composite side was not revived.
